VISION IS A PRIZED SENSE, AND WE DEPEND ON IT TO LIVE A LIFE OF INDEPENDENCE.
YET THERE ARE VERY FEW TIMES PAIN IS DEVELOPED THAT WILL GIVE ANY INDICATION OF A DISEASE PROCESS WHICH COULD AFFECT YOUR FREEDOM AND INDEPENDENCE
We wake each morning with the senses becoming alert. Eye sight gives us the conscuious experience of light. The ability to assess and maneuver in our environment. Our hearing provides us with an awareness of the sounds. Yet what would it be like not to be able to accureately assess either of these senses.
The eye, has no internal sensory nerve ends which would warn of a disease process. Yet issues like dry eye or functional issues may hide as a headache. Blurred vision may actually be the inability of one eye or both eyes to focus. Many people may actually be straining to maintain coordinated vision. Any small discrepancy in visual function can affect how the eyes work together. Double vision and blurry vision can result later in life without any warning, yet affect your productivity and ability to communicate clearly with the community you are associated with.
An Eye Examination is actually an Oculo Visual Assessment. The assessment includes, how well you can determine detail. How well your eyes can maneuver, focus and the clarity of the tissues of the eyes.
The eyes are a window to your body, as it is the only place where arteries, veins and nerve tissue can be see.
A peripheral vision analysis, or Threshold Visual field assessment is necessary to determine the visual function to the back of the brain, or the Occipital Cortex. It determines what you cannot see. And yes everyone has a blindspot in their visual field. The brain is just efficient at hiding it.
The full oculo visual assessment is recommended to be done by the age of 6 months and yearly to the age of 20, then every 1.5 to 2 years until the age of 65, then again yearly. Unless of course a more frequent assessment and follow up is recommended.
